Dog Obedience Training

All levels of obedience training are offered to any dog that is at least 16 weeks old, current on vaccinations, in good health, and examined regularly by a veterinarian. Methods of positive reinforcement make learning fun for you and your dog. Everyone should be able to experience a dog that walks nicely on a leash and comes when called. Obedience training can turn your canine into a reliable, faithful companion dog. Besides traditional obedience, house manners, leadership and social skills are emphasized in the beginning level.

Each training level contains a six week curriculum. After the completion of each level, your dog will graduate and receive their diploma. In the group training program, class size is restricted so that more individual attention can be given and as a result, progress generally occurs quickly. The levels offered are as follows:

Family Dog

This class will teach your dog the building blocks to becoming a reliable companion that walks well on a leash and comes when called. The following commands are taught in the beginning level:

  • Sit
  • Settle
  • Keeping your dog's attention
  • Release word
  • Heel with automatic sit
  • Heel with about turns
  • Heel with corners
  • Heel in serpentines
  • Heel in figure eights
  • Heel with changing pace
  • Stand
  • Sit-stay
  • Down
  • Down-stay
  • Recall

Included in the beginning level of obedience is training for house manners and social skills. Handling and health issues such as teeth brushing, ear cleaning, and nail trimming are also taught in the beginning level.

Advanced Family Dog

This class is a continuation of the beginning level. It emphasizes longer duration of the commands and more focused attention on the handler from the dog. Your dog will begin off-leash work in this level and some formal commands are introduced as well. The following commands are taught in the intermediate level:

  • Heel with U-Turn
  • Wait
  • Sit-stay with distractions
  • Stand-stay with distractions
  • Down-stay with distractions
  • Thirty second sit-stays
  • Thirty second down-stays
  • Thirty second stand-stays
  • Attention getting during distractions
  • Sit for exam
  • Stand for exam
  • Doggie push-ups
  • Come-fore
  • The finish left
  • The finish right
  • Moving down
  • Moving sit
  • Greetings with your dog
